Barnsdale Gardens: By the River Felted Picture Workshop

By the River Felted Picture Workshop

By the River Felted Picture Workshop Tuesday 22 April 2025. The workshop will run from 10am to 1pm at Barnsdale Gardens.

Learn how to blend Merino wools, silk fibres and other textures to create a beautiful landscape of a river during this half day workshop. This workshop will teach you how to create an a4 river insipred wet felted picture with needle felted birds and animals.

The workshop begins by you choosing colours for your sky, river and ground and each student may choose from a huge variety of colourful Merino wool.  I show you how to lay the colours and begin making the background. Then I pass out a variety of extra textures like silks, curls and sparkles for you to add depth to the picture. We’ll wet felt the background using hot soapy water, agitation, rolling and a bit of throwing. This process takes about 20 minutes and is quite physical. Once the fibres have felted together and the piece has shrunk, we squeeze the water out of them and begin needle felting. I will show you how to use the felting needles safely and add a little bird or two or a little animal peeking out of the reeds.

Each students work will be completely unique with all the colours they choose. The finished piece will be approximately A4 sized.

I will bring most of the materials with me, please bring a small hand towel. If you’d like you can bring an apron to protect your clothes from the soapy water, and rubber gloves (for touching hot water) but these are not mandatory.

Possible allergies: We will be using 100% wool and fairy liquid soap. If you are allergic to wool then this is not the class for you. If you are allergic to fairy liquid, please bring gloves.
